Being hopeful is much more than just wishful thinking… Hope predicts growth, helps with motivation and persistence, and can give us peace, vitality and a stronger sense of purpose.


Hope is defined as the perceived ability to produce pathways to achieve desired goals and to motivate oneself to use those pathways. American psychologist Charles Richard Synder devised ‘Hope Theory’ in the mid nineties; a cognitive model that includes goals, pathways and agency… Goals are abstract mental targets that guide human behaviours, Pathways thought entails the perceived ability to generate multiple routes to desired goals, and Agency thought entails the perceived ability to initiate and sustain movement along a pathway. In other words, Synder believes that hope is related to focused thought, strategy development and motivation.

Based on this theory, numerous studies have been conducted that link increased levels of hope to higher levels of academic and athletic performance and physical/mental health and well-being.

Therefore, it is thought that having hope can create better outcomes in numerous aspects of your life. Additionally, it has been found that intelligence and ability are not the soul determinants of success, with hope allowing you to grow skills you never thought you could.

Synder describes hope as being like a rainbow in the mind; it lights our spirits and makes us think of what is possible 🌈
